Neal Ruhl

Neal Ruhl joined the Oakland athletic department in July of 2012 as the Coordinator of Social Media. Ruhl was then named Coordinator of Broadcasting and Social Media in July 2013. He will also serve as lead play-by-play announcer for the Oakland men’s basketball team during the season on WDFN 1130-AM, Oakland’s flagship station, as well as the lead play-by-play announcer for all sports on TV20-Detroit as well as ESPN3.
Ruhl will also head up all aspects of broadcasting for the Oakland athletic department. He will also be in charge of all of Oakland athletic’s social media platforms, setting social media policy, creating initiatives and plans for more student involvement over social media websites.

During his time at Oakland, Ruhl has worked as a talk show host for Detroit’s ESPN Radio affiliate on 105.1 WMGC-FM. He has also worked as the play-by-play voice on the Detroit Pistons Radio Network along side former NBA world champion Rick Mahorn. He has been the lead play-by-play voice for the Horizon League Men’s Soccer and Tennis Championships as well as The Summit League Baseball Championships.
Prior to joining the athletic department, Ruhl served as color commentator for the Oakland men’s basketball team since 2009 on WDFN, where he worked with Emmy award winning, Detroit Tigers play-by-play announcer Mario Impemba. Prior to his work in radio, Ruhl worked for the Detroit Free Press from 2003-2007. He was also a freelance writer for papers across the country, ranging from Honolulu to Washington D.C. where he has covered a variety of sports from WNBA basketball to boxing and arena football.
Ruhl earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Oakland in 2008. He lives in Washingtown Township and is married to wife Silvia. They have two children.
