John C. Fountain, the ‘voice’ of EMU athletics since 1963, and his wife, Marjorie, have contributed generously to EMU both in personal resources and talent. In 1984, they established the J. Clarence and Courtney S. Fountain Sportscasters Scholarship Fund to provide a tuition grant each semester to a student pursuing a career in telecommunications and sportscasting. The scholarship was founded in memory of John’s late parents.
Now, John has published a book in hopes of raising additional funds for the scholarship. A View from the Booth to the Board Room chronicles the amazing transformation of EMU’s athletic program from what today would be called NCAA Division III to NCAA major college status.
John brings a unique perspective to his writing. In addition to broadcasting football and basketball, he has served the University in numerous administrative capacities including sports information director, director of Information Services, vice president for University Relations and secretary to the Board of Regents.
The book details the dramatic rise of EMU’s athletic program from obscurity to admission in the prestigious Mid-American Conference, and the reader gets a sense of the greatness and collegiality of the likes of Lloyd Olds, Elton Rynearson and Bingo Brown.
