William “Butch” Davis

William “Butch” Davis has been in the radio television communication business practically since birth. From the teachings of his father William E. Davis, Jr. who owned his own local radio television business in Ecorse, Michigan. As a child, Butch became very good at athletics and the arts as his mother (Alma Davis) a track runner in high school at Central High School in Louisville, Kentucky persuaded him to take up tap dancing for Genie Folks School of Dance at Beachwood Center, River Rouge, Michigan in the early and mid 60’s. Those tap dancing lessons helped with his athletic prowess as he shined in hockey, football, baseball and basketball. Butch graduated from Detroit Southwestern High School in the year of 1973.  Won a scholarship in football to play at Portland State University, where as a student he took up labor relations, minored in radio and television communications. He interned at television station KATU, an ABC affiliate. His mentors were reporters Lisa Starks, who currently is a Washington correspondent for ABC News national network, and Bill O’Reilly, currently does national radio program along with a show on Fox News network. Butch took on the first radio job at radio station KBOO, community radio in Portland, Oregon as a jazz disc jockey, where he acquired his air name “Simply Butch” for being so down to earth and straightforward with the public that he reached. The show eventually became a jazz/sports show from Butch being so knowledgeable about sports. Butch moved back to Michigan where he worked freelance in radio and also was a steward/union representative for Farmer Jacks supermarkets on behalf of Local 876 Retail Clerks Union until he left the company in 1995. From there, Butch went to Henry Ford Community College where he sharpened his skills in telecommunications and later went on to Wayne State University to earn a degree in communications/ journalism. Butch Davis has been a contributor for the Telegram News since 1999 as a sport editor/reporter. He is a longtime member of the DSBA. He has covered the Detroit Pistons, Tigers, Lions, Shock and Red Wings, in addition, the NBA Finals, WNBA Finals, NBA All-Star Game, NHL Winter Classis in Buffalo, Philadelphia, Chicago, and most recent Detroit/Ann Arbor at Michigan Stadium (The Big House).  Additional major sports events including the 2000 Olympics in Australia.  He is a resident of metro Detroit. He is a contributor on the Ron Cameron Sports Show on Friday (9-11am) on WPON 1460 on the AM dial.
