Will Tieman is President of the DSBA. Those who know Will Tieman, know he has a passion for radio. During the course of each year, over 350 radio stations around the nation air broadcasts that he anchors. Within the state of Michigan, he is most recognized as the voice of Tom Izzo’s Michigan State Basketball team. This upcoming season will be his 13th overall behind the Spartan microphone. During the Michigan State Sports broadcast season, Will is also a part of the Football broadcast team and hosts statewide daily shows with MSU Head Football Coach Mark Dantonio and Spartan Basketball Coach Tom Izzo. As a result of his radio work during the 2007 sports season the Michigan Association of Broadcasters honored his MSU Basketball play-by-play, as well as his yearly NCAA Basketball Tournament Preview Special Series that he has anchored for the past 16 seasons.
In addition to his MSU activities, Will has been the radio voice for all 10 Motor City Bowl Radio Network broadcasts and this past season was the radio voice of the inaugural International Bowl played in Toronto. Over the past 38 years, the radio and television veteran’s credits include his first college football and basketball play-by-play assignment with Miami (OH) University, providing national radio coverage from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, sports director at CBS’ WLFI-TV in Lafayette, Indiana, Big Ten Conference Television basketball play-by-play, the radio voice of the Big Ten Network and serving as the national play-by-play voice of Grambling State University Tigers, led by legendary Coach Eddie Robinson. ‘My position as the voice of Grambling Football was very unique and exciting,’ said Tieman. ‘As for Eddie Robinson, meeting and working with him is one of the greatest experiences of my life. As a man, he was better than advertised.’
Also of note, Will is one of the state’s voters for the Heisman Trophy and is a member of the Football Writers Association of America, the United States Basketball Writers Association and, of course, the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association. What makes radio broadcasting so special, according to Will, is that it may be the last intimate media. ‘It’s a one-on-one situation; just you and the listener. I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to make a career out of what I love to do.’ Which is why Will is such an advocate of the DSBA. ‘Thanks to the efforts of the DSBA, those who would like to become part of our profession are given resources to begin that process through scholarships and other financial means. It’s an organization that gives back and I am proud to be a member.’ We at the DSBA are proud to have Will Tieman as an active member!
